Funny stuff for February

February is arguably the most boring month of the year. The after-glow of Christmas has long since faded and New Years’ aspirations and intentions have generally been ditched. The days may be getting longer, but we still have quite a lot of winter left to go before Spring decides to make an appearance. For this reason, I thought I’d write a post about things that make me laugh. After all, there is no other better antidote to February.

LISTEN

Fortunately With Fi and Jane. If you haven’t tuned into the natterings of Jane Garvey (Lady Garv- Garv) and Fi Glover, you are missing out on an absolute treat. Unlike many other of my favourite podcasts, they haven’t taken a break this winter. From pet care, to cutlery ‘chuff’ and trouble with hose pipes, you’ll enjoy the musings of these wise cracking BBC broads.

Adam Buxton. Currently on a pod-break, this is the perfect time to take a deep dive into the archives of Doctor Buckles. My favourite episode features a conversation with Louis Theroux and Joe Cornish.

FOLLOW

Time to clean out your social media feed. Accounts that make you feel rubbish about yourself, simply have no place in February. The following accounts always give me a chuckle when I am roaming the corridors of Instaland :

Celeste Barber; Charity Shop Sue ; Saint Hoax and Hunsnet

READ

‘Me Talk Pretty One Day’ by David Sedaris. With his sardonic wit, the American humorist recounts his experiences of moving to Paris amongst other tales. As per his usual form, Sedaris sees everything and everyone as a subject fit for humour,

I feel bad about my neck’ by Norah Ephron. Witty and relatable short chapters from the writer of Harry Met Sally amongst other films. Each chapter provides a little gem of wisdom and a chuckle.

‘This is Going To Hurt’ and ‘Twas The Night Shift Before Christmas’ by Adam Kay. Hilarious anecdotes from a junior doctor on a gynaecology ward and a vital insight into the workings of our health system.

WATCH

The Marvellous Mrs Maisel on Amazon Prime. 1950’s housewife gets ditched by her husband and becomes a stand up comedian. Pure Joy.

Sex Education on Netflix. Drama about teenage sex therapist in the style of 80’s movie ‘The Breakfast Club’. Fast and funny and definitely not for the fainthearted.

My favourite funny films include : Coming To America ; Trading Places ; Bridesmaids and Mrs Doubtfire.

Make time for things that make you laugh this February. I am a firm believer that you can nearly always find a shred of humour in the darkest of places and that place is currently February. Roll on Spring, I haven’t got any hygge left in me!

I would love to know what makes you chuckle.
