We’ve reached ‘peak stuff’, which is rather problematic as we approach Christmas. We want to avoid dumping onto the planet and into our loved ones’ clutter. Is it just me or aren’t we all just constantly shifting around little messy piles in our homes? The concept of buying less but better is important, but how do we get the gift right?

Shopping from independent retailers is much more expensive and you won’t get your Black Friday bonanza discounts. However, it is important to remember that the product that you end up with is ultimately better. Generally, it is superior in quality, less harmful to the environment and better for the local community. In order to keep your budget in check, you may need to scale down your gifts. Choose a bar of beautiful chocolate rather than a tub of quality street or hand milled soap instead of your big, boxed up hand care set.

Taking part in a Secret Santa makes it easier to invest in quality presents. Instead of having to buy for all and sundry, you can take your time to think about the individual and what will rock their particular boat. I am a big fan of the concept of building a gift. If your recipient loves reading, chose them a book, throw in a pair of warm socks and some nice tea. Boom - forget your Red Letter days, you’ve given them an experience!

In an effort to gift it good, make sure you look at what’s around you in your local community. You may be surprised to find that there are some wonderful local artisans nearby. Please don’t forget your high street independent retailers, I for one do not relish the thought of a Poundland/Spoons/Costa apocalypse. You could put all your loot in a Poppy and Honesty bag or stocking, which will save on wrapping (lost sellotape meltdown on Christmas Eve anyone?)
